Sources of Inspiration

I won't be one of those people that says they're "obsessed" with something every time they get into it, but let's just say there's been a bit of a Simon Pegg/Edgar Wright mini film festival in my house of late. It started when I finally got Hot Fuzz on my Netflix, after which I felt the urge to rewatch Spaced (which is on Hulu, everybody, along with Black Books!), Shaun of the Dead, and every special feature or video blog available. And of course, it goes without saying that I watched all of them with commentary.

The thing that inspires me about Simon Pegg's career is that he makes his own work. In most cases, he makes it with the help of Edgar Wright, of course, as co-writer and director, but he's an actor who one wouldn't necessarily think to cast as a lead in an action/horror/romantic film. When he's cast in other peoples' work, he's a character role - Scotty in the new Star Trek, in which he was absolutely delightful, for instance - but he's a fantastic leading man in an action comedy movie. He's always perfectly cast because he and Wright write the projects themselves. He knows what he can do and he'll give himself the opportunity to do it.

He's probably not even thinking about it that way. I'm sure he's just a creative guy, like his cohorts, making kick ass movies and having fun doing it. I thought of this thing, guys. What say we make it happen?
