Busy Bees and Bats and Fleas

We start tech this week! Woohoo! I think Cato's going to be kind of awesome. I do. And I'm really loving getting to know some of these other Bats, and Reg E. Cathey, who plays Syphax and has been on The Wire, is so freaking cool. AND he likes comic books. So there.

Started work this week selling merchandise at The Lion King on Broadway. Worked Saturday night and Sunday matinee and evening. Working for a flat rate rather than commission is great; I try and sell but I don't have to make myself feel like a terrible person trying to get people to buy overpriced junk. As opposed to hocking tickets for Davenport Theatrical, I actually like some of this merchandise (AltarBoyz is a fine and dandy show and all, but stuffed animals of Julie Taymor's Scar costume beat tickets to AB any day). Let people willing to shell out 20 bucks to buy their children's placation if not their love do what they please; those who think the souvenir program is not worth Andrew Jackson's time can use it, as I would, at Trader Joe's.

I start training a week from today for work at FAO Schwartz; that's right, the Muppet people finally called me. While they're looking for people to put in time at the stores, they do also know that a lot of their employees are and will be actors and have some part time positions for us as well. Looks like I won't end up working for that temping agency I signed up with at all. Pay is 10/hr, which is less than I hoped to get for working with little mocosos, but at least I can put my mad hot glue gunning skillz to use. I think I'd rather secretly hate children and build/sell muppets than secretly hate coworkers and do office work. Plus HR lady who talked to me on the phone said the two ladies who interviewed me really really really liked me.

The only thing that does not rock at the moment is the cold I am fighting off. Zicam and sleep are helping, and if this were a usual week I'd be fine. But we start tech this week, and I'm nervous about my throat and anticipating lack of rest. I also got a free flu shot at LK in between the mat and evening shows (Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS was giving LK workers free flu shots for some reason...I didn't ask too many questions, just signed up for the free thing before my benefits kick in). I made sure to ask the guy if it mattered that I had a cold before injecting me with weak flu. He said it was fine, but I also didn't tell him I was about to enter hell week...

Ah, well. I'm in a show, I have two jobs, and potentially two visitors in the next few weeks. I can handle a case of the sniffles, eh?
